Long, vertical strips of shagbark hickory ( Carya ovata ) bark remain attached to the trunks at their middles, their upper and lower ends curling away from the trunk.
In 1792, William Bartram reported in his botanical book, " Travels ", a nut tree, " Juglans exalata " that some botanists today argue was the American pecan tree, but others argue was hickory, " Carya ovata ".
The trees found here include ( to name a few ) Eastern hemlock ( Tsuga canadensis ), Eastern black oak ( Quercus velutina ), Red Maple ( Acer rubrum ), Sugar Maple ( Acer saccharum ), Shagbark hickory ( Carya ovata ), Tree of Heaven ( Ailanthus altissima ), Flowering dogwood ( Cornus florida ) and Tulip tree ( Liriodendron tulipifera ).
In 1987, about 30 trees were registered as an arboretum by the Amiens Forestry Management Organisation, including an ancient white mulberry tree and giant poplars, oaks and conifers comprise the rest of the arboretum, with notable specimens including " Acer pseudoplatanus ", " Aesculus hippocastanum ", " Carpinus betulus ", " Carya ovata ", " Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ", " Larix decidua ", " Picea excelsa " and " Pinus nigra corsicata ".
Soaring canopy trees, understory trees, shrubs and ground cover typically found in the Carolina piedmont, include hardwoods White Oak ( Quercus alba ), Southern Red Oak ( Quercus falcata ), Shagbark Hickory ( Carya ovata ), Tulip Poplar ( Liriodendron tulipifera ), Blackgum ( Nyssa sylvatica ), Sweetgum ( Liquidambar styraciflua ); softwoods such as Shortleaf Pine ( Pinus echinata ), and White Pine ( Pinus strobes ); understory trees such as Flowering Dogwood ( Cornus Florida ), Redbud ( Cercis canadensis ) and Sourwood ( Oxydendrum arboreum ); and groundcovers such as Wood Ferns ( Dryopteris spp . ), Virginia Creeper ( Parthenocissus quinquefolia ) and even Poison Ivy ( Toxicodendron toxicarium ).
